OTTUMWA, Iowa (KYOU) -
According to Yale Medicine, about 50% of Men ages 51-60 have B-P-H. Which stands for Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia. It is defined as a non-cancerous enlargement of the prostate.
Those numbers increase to 70% among men 60-69 and up to 80% for men over 70.
Dr. Mahmoud Alameddine said, "weak stream, intermittency, straining, frequency, urgency, nighttime urination and sometimes incontinence."
Dr. Mahmoud Alameddine says people mistake these symptoms for old age... but they could actually be signs of an enlarged prostate.
Doctor Alameddine said, “Most of those patients they think that they have to live with it, and this is a part of aging process which is not true. We have a lot of things we can do."
Ottumwa Regional offers the Aquablation procedure. They are the only hospital offering this in Iowa right now.
Dr. Alameddine says this only takes one day and a single overnight stay to make sure everything is okay.
Dr. Alameddine explained, "A high-powered jet of water is directed at the enlarged area of the prostate."
A precision robot controls the water jet... which removes the excess tissue of the enlarged prostate. Dr. Alameddine warns not to ignore symptoms.
Dr. Alameddine wrapped up by saying, "BPH is very treatable, and early intervention can prevent more serious complications."
