OTTUMWA, Iowa (KYOU) -Dr. Dominic Formaro is Ottumwa Regional Health Center’s newly appointed General Surgeon. Prior to his arrival, patients would have to wait for surgeons to come to Ottumwa or take themselves to other hospitals.
Formaro explained, “Having somebody who is consistent in the rural communities means those folks don’t have to leave home to get the care that they need. In some cases, especially down here, you’re talking about traveling maybe an hour and a half away for something we can take care of same day. “
Dr. Formaro said filling that void of having a dedicated surgeon in a rural area, is one of the reasons he took this job. He said he’s also community driven.
Formaro spoke highly of the community by saying, “so far, what I’ve seen in this community... its diverse but its resilient and they’re really appreciative to have somebody that will be consistent in their community. “
Dr. Formaro has worked across the state, from Des Moines to the more rural Jasper County.
According to the CDC, cancer is the 2nd leading cause of death behind heart disease in Iowa.
Formaro is a firm believer in early screenings for his patients.
“There’s rising cancer rates especially colorectal cancer rates in younger people and also breast cancer. Those are both hugely important in our communities,” said Formaro.
Dr. Formaro recognizes not all medical services have been available to Ottumwans.
Formaro explained, “Ottumwa is a community that I think really needs services and I’m glad to be a part of bringing those services back to the community. “
An Open House to meet Dr. Formaro will take place next Thursday at Ottumwa Regional from 5pm-7pm at 1011 E. Pennsylvania Ave. Suite D.
